Best of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

 live in tropical/subtropical waters next to the coastline 

where they enjoy the seagrass, their main food.

"Kaxan Balam" Project: Looking for jaguar


Yucatan has the highest jaguar's density in México.
Panthera onca goldmani is the suspecies that we can cross from Yuum Balam National Protected Area down to Calakmul Biosfere Reserve passing by Sian Ka'an Biosfere Reserve, both part of UNESCO World Heritage since the late 80's.


"Kaxan Balam" Project ("look for jaguar" in maya yucateco) pretend to start an investigation about jaguar presence in some parts of Quintana Roo state. The first part of the project would bring us the first piece of information throught testimonies and physical evidence (foot prints, scratches, dregs...) that provides the leads for investigation 2nd part which includes the use of camara trail stations.


Such a project help us to know about jaguar population's general health, the abundance of the preys which is a general indicator to know how the local ecosystem is doing

Established January 20th 1986 as part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program UNESCO World Heritage Site
Unique for its geography and wetlands
23 known archeological sites (with relics dating up to 2,300 years old)
103 known mammal species
336 known bird species
Nesting ground for many species of wading birds
Annual rainfall between 44 and 48 inches
Important nesting site for two endangered sea turtle species
Believed to be inhabited in the Pre-Classic and Classic Periods in the chieftanships of Cohuah and Uaymil
Currently home to over 2,000 inhabitants
Largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean (approximately 1.3 million acres)
